I’ve tried color contacts on before and they looked nice…. but really fake. They were freshlook color contacts which do actually look kind’ve fake. So my uncle wears colored contacts also that I used to think were his natural eye color, but now that i’m older i know a little better to know where his “beautiful eyes” actually came from, which took a while since they looked really, really natural. He got contact lens from Cooper Vision called Natural Touch and everyone always compliments him on his eyes which look so natural. So heres the thing: I know Cooper Vision also sells other color contact lens types and I was wondering if I should go with Natural Touch or should I go with whatever other ones they have (name it please) and I have tan skin with dark eyes and medium brown hair with red in it (came from my dad’s side), so also include in your answers what colors would look good on the description. Thanks!

I personally really like the ‘Hazel’ color. My girlfriend wears them and she also has dark eyes and brown hair and they lighten up her eyes enough to really make them pop!

With safer and more comfortable contact lenses coming onto the market at a faster pace than ever before, many people are taking the opportunity to try out colored contact lenses. Eye color altering lenses have been around for several years now, but have been most commonly used for dramatic effect in theater and film until recently.

Kinds of Contact Lenses

Lenses that are designed to improve poor vision are known as corrective lenses while contacts that deliberately change the color of your eye are known as cosmetic lenses. Fortunately, the two types are not mutually exclusive — lenses that both change your appearance and correct your vision are available and perfectly safe.

Get an Exam

People who do not need corrective lenses may purchase and wear the cosmetic version, but must first have an eye exam. During the course of the exam, your optometrist will measure your eye, check for genetic problems such as astigmatism and, of course, test your vision capability.
Before you leave the exam, your eye doctor may offer a pair of temporary contact lenses to help you get used to the feel of them as well as practice putting them in and taking them out. The doctor or an assistant will also offer one on one instruction on the proper methods for inserting and removing contacts. If this help is not offered for some reason, let your doctor know that it’s your first time using contacts; the help is well worth it.

Whether you need vision correction or not, your eye doctor should supply you with a written prescription before you leave. This prescription will be necessary when purchasing or ordering colored contacts. Some patients may choose to purchase their contacts through their eye doctor. This is not a bad idea, since the doctor and his staff deal with contacts and glasses every day and may be able to suggest certain brands and styles.

Choosing Colored Contact Lenses

Once you’ve taken your eye exam and have your prescription in hand, you’re nearly ready to finally purchase cosmetic lenses. But before you make that final purchase, there are a few more things to consider.

Where to Buy

Colored contact lenses are available for purchase from a number of locations, including nearly any location that sells glasses and normal contacts and, of course, the internet. Before you make a purchase, be sure to consult your eye doctor, as well as trusted friends and family who wear contacts to learn more about specific brands.
When deciding which company to purchase your lenses from, it usually pays to stick with a name you are familiar with, or at least one which has been recommended to you. Although prices may be extremely low for certain brands, there may be a reason for such a discount. Sticking to a well known brand brings the good reputation that particular company has built over time.

What Style is for You?

Cosmetic contact lenses are available in a dizzying array of styles and colors. Your eye change can be as subtle or as drastic as you like. If you’re looking at wearing color contact lenses for Halloween, simply for cosmetic reasons, there are a few things that you’ll need to know:

What the FDA says: it is illegal to sell decorative contact lenses without a valid prescription, however during Halloween the easiest way around that for vendors is to sell over the internet. Be extremely careful if you are thinking of purchasing color contacts from an internet source. Last year, the FDA received reports of corneal ulcer associated with wear of decorative contact lenses in excess of the recommended period. Corneal ulcer can progress rapidly, leading to internal ocular infection if left untreated — and possible blindness.
No Sharing. Never, under any circumstances, let a friend or family member try out or borrow your contact lenses, whether they’re Halloween color contacts or your prescription contacts.

Wash Your Hands. Throughout the night, as it becomes later and you start to become tired, your eyes might start to bother you. If you’ve never worn contact lenses before, let alone color contact lenses, they could start to irritate your eyes as the night rolls on. The absolute worst thing that you can do it take them out or put them in without washing your hands thoroughly.

It’s pretty much a given that during Halloween there will be many costumes that involve the use of color contacts. If you have a prescription for contacts, have ordered prescription color contacts from your eye doctor, and are familiar with the precautions that you must take when wearing contacts, then you probably have nothing to worry about.

A contact lens prescription is still required in some cases to order these lenses, even if a power of 0.00, i.e. no corrective action, is selected. Opaque color lenses can completely change your eye color from brown to blue and blue to purple. Even brown eyes can be changed to blue. These lenses can be used as a fashion statement or just to reflect your mood.

Light-filtering contacts are used to enhance your vision. These lenses can also alter the outward appearance of the eye, however they actually alter what the wearer sees as well. They can give amazing enhancement to certain colors in your field of view, so that for example a golf ball or tennis ball stands out more clearly, making them easier to hit. The light-filtering tint enhances the chosen color such as yellow by dulling the other colors in the visual spectrum.

Color contact lenses can be used to change the color of the eye anytime, even one in the morning and another in the evening. Contact lenses are more useful if the color of the eye has to be strengthened, that is, green colored eye can be made greener with a contact lens. The main advantage of color contact lenses is that even people without visual problems can use colored contact lenses.

There are four types of colored contact lenses: opaque color tint, visibility tint, enhancement tint and light filtering tint. Color contact lenses come with either visual correction (called” Plano” lenses) without visual correction.

Opaque color tints are also called as costume or theatrical lenses. These lenses are used in movies for special eye effects.

Visibility tint: A visibility tint is usually a light blue or green tint added to the contact lens. This color is exclusively used to help to see them better if dropped on the floor, during insertion and removal. Since they are very light, they do not affect the original color of the eyes.

Enhancement tint: As the name implies, enhancement tint is used to enhance the existing color of the eye. It is used by people who want to make the color of their eyes more intense. It is a solid translucent tint that is a bit darker than visibility tint.

Color tints: Color tints are usually made of patterns of solid colors and come in a wide range of colors like hazel, violet, blue, green and gray. They dramatically change the color of the eye and are deeper, opaque tints.

Color contact lenses are manufactured to look as natural as possible, some are available with a series of tiny colored dots on the lens and the center of the lenses are clear for visibility. A more recent development is the Light filtering tints designed for sports use since they enhance certain colors like yellow for tennis balls. Thus the ball stands out against the background making it easier to target. Light filtering contact lenses are also exclusively manufactured for golfers to distinguish between the various greens on a golf course. Other contact lenses for trap shoolers, skiers and other sports enthusiasts and even for spectators are also available.

There are certain disadvantages of color contacts. During blinking, the colored portion may slide over the pupil. To accommodate varying light conditions, the size of the pupil changes and therefore at times the pupil may be larger than the center of the lenses. At such times, the vision may be slightly affected.

Color contact lenses can be worn on a disposable basis, daily wear basis or an extended week basis. Colored contact lenses can be worn up to one week continuously before being removed and cleaned. After removal the lens must be cleaned, rinsed and disinfected well. They should be cleaned in solutions approved by the FDA and manufactured by reputable companies-never compromise on quality, never leave the lenses exposed to dust or air. While the lenses are in use a lubricating solution can be used, if recommended, to give comfort.

Colored contact lenses have all the advantages of an ordinary lens and are available both as around the clock lenses and monthly lenses. Most of the color contact lenses have inbuilt ultraviolet radiation protection that protects eyes against the sun’s injurious rays. Ultraviolet blocker is provided in a clear form and does not disturb the vision.

I’ve been thinking about getting some color contacts.
I have 20/20 vision and don’t need glasses or anything.

Do I need to go through my eye doctor to buy contacts or can I just purchase them off the internet on my own?

and what brands would you recommend? I know people have been saying acuvue colors and freshlook are good but what other brands have you tried and liked?

First of all, you can get color contacts if you don’t need any power to correct your vison. They’re called plano lenses

Second, you do have to go through your eye doctor. Like all contacts, color contacts are a medical device and require a perscription to purchase. If you try to go online and buy them they will ask for your optometrist’s information because, by law, they have to verify the perscription. Sorry to say it, but if you haven’t gotten a contact lens evaluation from a doctor you’re not going to be able to get contacts.

As far as brand it depends on the shape of your eye. If you decide to go ahead and get the perscription the doctor will fit you with the lenses he/she believes will be the most comfortable for you.

Trust me, I’m an Optometric Technician and I get this question all the time.
